Welcome to The Expressive Mom Show! I’m Miriam Rachel, your host, and I am thrilled to be here with you today. I am a Canadian mother, author, wife, freelance writer, astrologer, psychic medium, and tarot reader. My journey has taken me through various experiences and roles, from SEO consultant to social media manager.

But my passion for writing and connecting with others has always remained at the core of who I am. I am the jill of all trades. And it is my birthday today, but since no one cares, I will not elaborate on that further.

That said, today’s episode is about self-care on a budget. Taking care of our mental and emotional well-being shouldn’t have to break the bank. This episode will explore affordable ways to prioritize self-care and enhance mental wellness. So, let’s dive right in.

Self-Care Does Not Have to Be Expensive

First, let’s dispel the myth that self-care requires expensive spa treatments or luxury retreats. While those can be wonderful experiences, self-care is ultimately about prioritizing our well-being, no matter the budget. It’s about finding simple and affordable ways to nourish ourselves physically, mentally, and emotionally.

One of the most accessible and affordable forms of self-care is practicing mindfulness and meditation. These practices require a quiet space and a few minutes of your time. You can find free guided meditations online or use smartphone apps that offer meditation exercises.

Taking a few moments daily to connect with your breath and cultivate mindfulness can profoundly impact your mental well-being. And you know what, if you cannot meditate that way like I can’t, I would say taking a walk or doing a chore to get into a meditative state counts as much.

Journaling Is a Great Form of Self-Care

Another affordable way to prioritize self-care is through journaling. All you need is a pen and paper or a digital journaling app. Journaling allows you to express your thoughts, feelings, and experiences, providing a therapeutic outlet for your emotions. It can help you gain clarity, process difficult emotions, and foster self-reflection.

You can find journaling prompts online or write freely about whatever comes to mind. Or, if you don’t mind the world to see what you are processing, you can always start a blog, and I recommend Medium.com as a way to go. I just started my own publication there called Candid Talk, and I may open it up to writers who want to do the same, but for now, it is my space there. I do it because it does help, but it also helps those who read it realize they aren’t alone if their struggles are similar. It is $5 a month, but it is worth it.

Get Active, Go Into Nature, and Make Meaningful Connections

Engaging in physical movement and exercise is another affordable form of self-care. You don’t need an expensive gym membership or fancy equipment to get moving. Take a walk or jog in your neighborhood, follow workout videos on YouTube, or explore free fitness apps. Physical activity benefits your physical health and releases endorphins, which contribute to improved mood and mental well-being.

Connecting with nature is a powerful and cost-effective way to enhance mental wellness. Spend time outdoors, whether going for a hike in a local park, having a picnic in a nearby green space, or simply sitting under a tree and listening to the sounds of nature. Nature has a way of grounding us and providing peace and tranquility.

Cultivating meaningful relationships is another important aspect of self-care. Reach out to friends and loved ones for support and connection. Plan low-cost activities, like having a movie night at home, cooking a meal together, or organizing a potluck gathering. Sharing quality time with loved ones can nourish and support your mental well-being.

Additionally, taking care of your physical health through proper nutrition and sleep is essential for overall well-being. Cooking meals at home using affordable ingredients, meal planning, and bringing lunch to work can save money while promoting a healthy lifestyle. Prioritize good sleep hygiene by creating a relaxing bedtime routine and ensuring you get enough rest each night.

Be Kind to Yourself

Lastly, don’t underestimate the power of self-compassion and self-acceptance. These practices cost nothing but have a profound impact on our mental wellness. Practice speaking kindly to yourself, embracing your imperfections, and nurturing a positive mindset. Engage in self-care activities that bring you joy and remind yourself that you deserve to prioritize your well-being.

As we wrap up today’s episode, I encourage you to reflect on your own self-care practices and explore affordable ways to prioritize your mental wellness. Remember, self-care is about making intentional choices that support and nourish your well-being, regardless of your budget. Small, consistent actions can significantly impact your overall mental health.

Thank you for joining me on this solo episode of The Expressive Mom Show. This discussion on self-care on a budget has provided you with practical tips and ideas for prioritizing your well-being without breaking the bank. Remember, you are worthy of self-care, no matter your financial situation.

Until next time, take care and be well. Next week, the topic will be why focusing on living up to society’s expectations can be harmful and what steps we can take to let go of these pressures. This is the episode where I will begin to become more raw, and I plan to do a few more solo episodes in August where I will become vulnerable.

I have started this podcast as soft and not overly interesting, but be patient. I will get to the good stuff soon, and guests will begin to appear in September. In the meantime, have a good one, and ciao for now.
