The contact with water is a compulsory passage participating in the fundamental development of the newborn and the infant. Water, in addition to constituting 75% of the whole body of the infant, is essential to the life of the human being, and more particularly babies. While water is essential for rehydration and hygienic purposes, the contact with water has also been objectified by many studies as an important factor of psychomotor development of babies.
Thus, contact with water by a baby should be made in optimal conditions to avoid various complications related to a poor adaptation. These complications may be psychological such as phobia of water (aquaphobia), infectious as the case of ear infections, or even vital like the case of dry drowning.
- The Omni Bath Visor is a perfect alternative that allows a positive, safe and practical approach to a baby’s contact with water, all while avoiding all the potential complications.
Here’s why:
- Otitis:
As said by Dr. Graham Worrall from University of Chicago Medicine: “Acute otitis media is an inflammation of the eardrum and / or middle ear. Infants are more prone to this type of infection following a cold.” Fever and ear pain (earache) are the most common symptoms. Otitis can be complicated in the long term by language disorders and psychomotor development. Their treatment is thus essential.
Otitis was initially a trivial infection in the nose, a cold for example, which is complicated by the migration of viruses or bacteria involved to the cavity of the middle ear, via a conduit that is called the Eustachian tube.
Babies are particularly prone to ear infections for several reasons:
- From an anatomical point of view, their Eustachian tubes are shorter (1.25 cm), probably more
permeable, and placed horizontally. This favors microbial invasions. The nose communicates indeed with the throat and the ears and in case of cold, there can be inflammation of the ear. Vegetations also tend to be particularly large because of repeated rhino-pharyngeal infections (thus blocking Eustachian tubes).
- The immune system of toddlers is not yet mature and their nasopharynx has a higher infectious burden than the adult.
- Being predisposed to develop otitis, infants need special attention in prevention against this type of infection which is often favored by bathing and contact of the craniofacial sphere of the baby with the water.
The Omni Bath Visor is, therefore, an excellent approach to minimize the risk of infection.
- Dry drowning:
According to the WHO (World Health Organization): “Drowning is defined as respiratory failure due to immersion or submersion in liquid. It occurs when water enters the lungs and breathing becomes impossible.” Lack of oxygen then causes cardiac arrest and then death. A tiny amount of water can be enough to flood our lungs in seconds. Sometimes drowning can occur several hours after swimming (up to 72 hours later). In these cases, we speak of “dry drowning” or “secondary drowning”.
- It is unfortunately in infants that this type of accident is the most common.
As the pulmonary capacity of infants is reduced compared to that of adults, the saturation of the lungs is thus faster and this, even in case of inhalation of a reduced amount of water. The ability to cough is also decreased, and the mechanisms of adaptation to hypoxia (oxygen deprivation) are minimal.
Thus, inhalation of small amounts of water by the infant can go unnoticed and sometimes have fatal consequences.
- Being predisposed to dry drowning, infants need special attention in terms of prevention against this type of accident that occurs especially after an in adapted contact with water.
Omni Bath Visor is, therefore, an excellent approach to allow baby bathing while eliminating the vital risk of dry drowning.
- Aqua-phobia.
As defined by The American Heritage Stedman’s Medical Dictionary: “Aqua-phobia (from Latin: aqua meaning “water” and Greek: φόβος, phobos meaning “fear”) or hydrophobia is an irrational and chronic fear of water. Aquaphobia is a specific phobia involving a level of fear that interferes with his or her daily life.” People suffer in different ways and can experience it even if they know that the water of an ocean, lake or even a bathtub is not in imminent danger. They can avoid hobbies like boating, swimming or even swimming in deep waters even if they can swim. This anxiety generally extends to the fear of being wet or splashed when the person does not expect it, or to grow or throw in the water.
- Many studies indicate that aquaphobia, like all other neurotic disorders, starts when the individual is in the infant stage.
- Unpleasant and repetitive contact with water during this period is probably the main cause of this disorder, which proves to be very disabling at the adult stage.
Omni Bath Visor is an excellent approach to allow baby bath in ease, while eliminating the risk of developing this psychological disorder in adulthood. It makes contact with water pleasant by avoiding splashes on the face, inhalations and coughs reflexes, as well as eye irritation due to the products contained in soaps and shampoos.
The Omni Bath Visor is the perfect alternative to avoid the vital, infectious and psychological complications of inadequate water contact to infant or young child in the bath-tub/shower. It is:
