When my husband and I bought this house, we loved it so much that we did not care that the basement was not finished. However, we also knew that finishing it would be a very expensive job. We prepared ourselves to foot it because it is great to have an extra living area, and secondly old unfinished basements can lead to major problems like black mold. That is nasty stuff, and not to mention, nasty for you.

The guys started working today on it, and before they started, I was sure to take pictures of the unfinished basement because in 3 to 4 weeks- we will never see it again. Hey, that is a good thing because I have always found that unfinished basements can be quite creepy (I suppose that is the third reason to finish your basement). Creepy or not, here is what it looked like before the guys started.

Yes it was a bit messy and we moved the mess away into the cold room and what plans to stay as the storage area. Since this is day 1 of the construction, they only were able to get so much done. While they were sawing, drilling and banging away for 8 hours today, this is what they had gotten done.

The first picture from after their work today shows where they are planning to put a wall to separate the storage area from the main rec room. The second picture shows where they plan to put the bathroom which is going to be right next to the stairs.

There will be no bedroom. Just a big rec room and bathroom. We will put a pull out bed in one of the corners of the rec room. And since we rarely have guests who stay overnight, it is not a big deal to have a bedroom. In fact, I am planning to use part of the rec room as additional office space. I am looking forward to see what they get done in the next day. I will also keep you updated!
