Whether you plan to host a few events this summer or want a safe place for your kids to hang out, you can accomplish all of this with a well-designed backyard area. The backyard is an extension of your home, and it deserves a new look just like the inside does.

It doesn’t take much to develop innovative ideas for sprucing up your patio. Here are a few to get you started.

Create a Green Oasis

Your backyard already provides you and your family with plenty of fresh air, but you can always enhance it! Consider adding some plants into the mix to give an extra boost to the air quality. The plants will make a huge difference in your space.

Plants encourage you to live in the present moment, and they engage the senses. Gardening also helps to promote exercise in a child’s life because most children enjoy getting their hands dirty. The constant movement of digging in the soil allows them to develop motor skills.

You can always use this as a teachable moment and educate your kids about the plants, explaining to them the purpose of each plant and what each needs to survive.

Throw an Awning In

Everyone loves sunshine, but not everyone loves the sun’s rays. As research has shown, UV rays can create severe health problems. Of course, the sun is an excellent source of vitamin D but only in moderation.

Consider installing a patio awning to protect you and your family from those rays. You can even get one that retracts so that on rainy days or when winter rolls back around, the awning won’t fall victim to water damage.

When you feel like lounging outside, the awning gives you shade, so you’ll get to experience plenty of summer without all the heat.

Don’t Be Afraid of Color

Additional plants certainly add color, especially if you incorporate flowers, but your patio furniture also contributes to the atmosphere of your patio. Pastel throw pillows and bright rugs help tie the whole space together.

Everyone loves a good pillow because they invite comfort into the room. They signal to guests that your patio is a place to relax. With a waterproof rug, you can explore the various designs, patterns, and colors.

Place throw pillows on every seating area and the rug at the focal point of the outdoor space. If pillows and rugs don’t add enough color for you, place a few bright, decorative vases on your patio too. These additions will make your patio the new cozy spot in your home.

It doesn’t have to be hard to come up with innovative ideas to spruce up your patio. All you have to do is closely examine your backyard and decide which parts could use a change.
