Dogs are incredible, and most have an excellent temperament. Additionally, they make great companions. Keep in mind that there are some breeds of dogs that do well with children whereas others do not. Additionally, some breeds require more activity than others, and there are many dogs that shed to the point of you having to vacuum your home on a daily basis. That said, before you go and adopt that pooch that has been on your mind, there are some considerations you must make before making such a huge commitment. That all depends on your current lifestyle! Let’s take a look at four dog breeds that are not ideal for just anyone to adopt.

  1. Alaskan Malamutes – Alaskan Malamutes are fantastic dogs. There is no doubt about that. However, according to Your Purebred Puppy, this breed needs constant activity. If they are not stimulated enough, they will become destructive in your home. That said, if your Alaskan Malamute did not get much exercise and you left him at home for hours alone – then that means you will probably be coming home to softa stuffing all over your floor as well as ripped up mail that you had not had a chance to open. That means, if you are too busy to make sure that your dog gets plenty of activity, the Alaskan Malamute breed is not ideal for you.
  2. Bullmastiffs – Bullmastiffs are large, and they are incredibly agile which may be why parents of young kids would be keen on adopting this breed. However, they are not the ideal dog to adopt if you have small children. According to The Nest, even though the Bullmastiff breed is gentle, they are extremely large and strong. That means they can unintentionally injure your kids if they are in the dog’s way. They also can become quite rambunctious and can play very hard to the point that they can knock you down. That is even more of a concern when it comes to little kids in the picture.
  3. Chow Chows – Chow Chows may appear to be cute and cuddly. And, you might be keen on getting one if you have small kids.  However, according to Pet Care RX, they are not nearly as cuddly and playful as they appear. In fact, they have an unpredictable disposition. That means they are known to be friendly one moment and can be standoffish the next moment, and will give you a warning by growing or snarling if they do not want to be bothered.
  4. German Shepherds – German Shepherds are really nice dogs and they are smart. However, according to German Shepherd Central, they are not ideal for every potential dog owner. Firstly, they shed a lot and that means you will be expected to vacuum your home every day in order to keep it clean and free of fallen dog fur. Secondly, they require plenty of activity and that means if you don’t have time to keep a dog active by running with your pooch or at the very least giving him a few walks a day – this is not the right breed for you. And, this breed can come with a host of health problems which can cause your vet bills to go up as well as you having to take time out of your busy schedule to take your dog to the vet for frequent checkups. The bottom line is if you don’t have the time to meet the strict needs of a German Shepherd, then this is not the right breed.

Now that you are aware of the four dog breeds that you should think twice before adopting based on your current lifestyle and if kids are in the picture- you can start exploring other breeds and learn about them. Some of the other breeds that were not mentioned may not be a good fit either for your lifestyle and current situation. That said before you adopt any dog, you must do your research to find out if the breed is the right one for you and your family. Good luck with finding the right fur baby!
